THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN A DEVELOPMENTAL
PROGRAM
AND TRADITIONAL GUIDANCE PROGRAMS
In the more traditional counseling programs, the counselor
functioned like a fireman. When there was a problem, he / she "put
out the fire". The developmental counselor anticipates what
the student will need to be successful during each stage of their
development and helps them to prepare for success. The developmental
counselor works with all of the students, helping them to acquire
life skills which are necessary for success in school.

Trumbull Public Schools
Comprehensive Developmental Guidance
Trumbull was one of the first public school systems
in Connecticut to develop and implement a Comprehensive Developmental
Guidance Program. Trumbull's program has been viewed as representing
the model recommended by the American School Counselor Association.,
the National Association of Secondary School Principals, and the
National Association of College Admission Counselors. Our program
has received National and State recognition as an example of an
exemplary guidance model.
Since its implementation approximately twenty years
ago, our program has been continuously monitored and revised in
an attempt to offer each student the maximum support and assistance
with their education, career and personal development.
